What is Total Internal Reflection?

CBSE Class 10 - Physics - Human Eye and Colourful World - What is Total Internal Reflection? (#eduvictors) (#cbseNotes)

① When a ray of light travels from optically denser medium to optically rarer medium, it bends away from the normal at the surface separating two media.

As the angle of incidence increases, the angle of refraction also increases. Due to which, the ray of light moves farther away from the normal after refraction.

The angle of incidence at which the angle of refraction is 90° is called  critical angle (C). For the angle of incidence greater than critical angle, the light is completely reflected in the denser medium.

The surface separating these two media acts like a "mirror". This phenomenon is known as total internal reflection of light.

The sparkling of diamond is also due to total internal reflection. The optical fibres used in signal communication   reflection of light also work on this principle. Mirage formation is also due to internal reflection.

Question: What is mirage?

Answer: Mirage is an optical illusion generally observed in hot region due to total internal reflection.

Question: What is looming?

Answer: Looming is an optical illusion observed in cold region in the atmosphere above horizon due  to the total internal reflection of light.
